Life at GSE
Work-life balance is truly a priority at GSE, for staff and for partners. We go the extra mile for our clients but also know and respect the importance of personal time. We recognize that the timing of our client’s filing deadlines is seasonal, heavily weighted to the first half of the calendar year, which results in the need for some longer (but not excessive!) working hours during those months. But we also recognize those extra efforts of our staff with an in-lieu time policy that provides our employees a mix of financial compensation and additional time off during the less busy time of year.
We value the unique set of skills that each of our staff bring to GSE with ongoing support to help in growing those skills. Our teaching and mentoring approach carries through not only for our less experienced staff, but for everyone. Much of our formal professional development comes from our own partners, managers and staff, and draws on the skills of our tax group and seasoned assurance professionals. But we know most of our learning comes from opportunities to work with staff and partners on new and challenging client work in a supportive environment.
GSE is looking for high quality people who would be a fit for our firm. People with integrity, common sense, good judgement and an upbeat attitude. We’re always interested in strong candidates to join the firm, and welcome applications to our HR team, which can be submitted any time to us at careers@grahamscottenns.com.
In the Community
GSE’s social committee is active throughout the year, organizing annual events that include a family Christmas breakfast with Santa, staff parties for end of Tax Season and Christmas, and a golf day, and celebration of birthdays. We also throw in things like a chili cookoff, best cookies competition, participation in the Railway City Road Race.
The partners and staff of GSE are active in the St. Thomas – Aylmer and London area community groups both as members or serving on the board of directors. They include:
- East Elgin Family Health Team
- Boler Mountain
- Rotary Club of London-Lambeth
- Elgin Federation of Agriculture
- Yarmouth Mutual Insurance
- St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital audit committee
- Ontario Mini Tractor Pullers Association
- Western University Alumni, Elgin Branch
- St. Thomas Curling Club
- Better Business Bureau
- St. Thomas & District Chamber of Commerce
GSE also supports many local community organizations through donations and sponsorships.
Students
Why is a co-op work term with GSE consistently rated by the student as an outstanding experience? Because we deliver on a promise to all our students to experience a wide range of types of services with strong support from the rest of our team. As an approved CPA Ontario training office, we recognize the importance of providing our co-op students with a good mix of work, working on jobs large and small, and working for a variety of managers and partners.
Our firm consistently provides our co-op students with a variety of work experiences each term, including assurance and notice-to-reader work and preparing corporate and personal tax returns. We assign a staff mentor to our students and ensure that each student works for a variety of managers and partners.
Our track record of successful CFE writers from both our Aylmer and St. Thomas offices speaks for itself. Between 2017 and 2019 we have had eight successful CFE first time writers, with a 100% success rate. Our training and development committee and our PERT committee ensure that the path of growth as a professional is well supported from day one for all staff.
