Update Regarding St. Thomas And Aylmer Office Access

COVID-19 Update: In response to protecting our valued clients and staff during the COVID-19 situation, we have implemented some on-site precautionary measures to minimize in-person contact and promote social distancing. All in person meetings at the office and upcoming out-of-office engagements have been cancelled.

Drop-box: During office hours, both the Aylmer and St. Thomas locations have implemented a drop-box system whereby incoming deliveries will be quarantined for 3 days.  For larger deliveries that will not fit inside the drop box, please call ahead, or knock on the door and you will be directed accordingly.

Alternate Contact methods: Where possible, please call, e-mail or make arrangements to have a virtual meeting.  Many of our staff and partners are working from home, but have access to e-mail, the portal and voicemail, so please continue to contact them as you normally would using those methods.

Stay Home: We ask that you refrain from coming if you are exhibiting symptoms of the COVID-19 virus (fever, cough, difficulty breathing, chills), have been out of the country within the past 14 days, or have been in contact with anyone in either of these situations.

We appreciate you working with us as we continue to focus on serving your accounting and taxation needs.

A Special Update from Graham Scott Enns

To all our valued clients,

In light of the public health concerns regarding COVID-19, and the possibility of its spread in Southwestern Ontario, we wanted to share with you how Graham Scott Enns is addressing many of the challenges that we are all facing together, and offer our advice for the current tax season.

Our Business Continuity and Health and Safety teams have taken a strong lead, both in and out of our offices, to put several measures in place that will ensure we can continue to provide the excellent service and support you have come to expect from us, in any situation.  Our offices in Aylmer and St. Thomas are currently open, but we are prepared to have some staff, if not all, work remotely should the need arise.  We are fully committed to providing uninterrupted service during this busy season.

Though our offices remain open, we are advising all our clients to be mindful of coming in for everyone’s health and safety of course.  While it is always our pleasure to meet with you in person, we do offer voice and video conferencing to meet any communication needs.  We are also advising all our clients to use our secure web-portal for any electronic file transfers. If you have not used our portal before, we encourage you to reach out to us so we may invite you to that system.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, or if we can provide any assistance during these next few months.

Firm Culture of GSE

Submitted by Alexandra DeVincenzo, Blake Gough and Lindsay Kay – Senior Staff Accountants

One of the best parts of working at GSE is the firm culture. Everyone is friendly and welcoming. The partners are always interested in hearing from staff, whether it’s a client specific question or chatting about weekend plans.

Everyone works as a team to help each other develop both technical and soft skills. Asking questions is encouraged, especially at the beginning of your career or if you’re working on something new or complex. We are always bouncing ideas off each other to reach the best solution for a problem.

Our firm culture is like a family. The partners care about how staff are doing, both professionally and personally. They encourage everyone to take time for their family and other personal commitments. To help build our family dynamic and office camaraderie, GSE’s social committee organizes a variety of social events and friendly competitions including:

• End of Tax Season Party
• Summer BBQ
• Golf Day (for ALL skill levels, including people who only golf once a year – at this event)
• Christmas Party

Another great thing about GSE is the support for our communities. Throughout the year, we raise money for local charities through our casual Fridays, we collect food and hygiene products for the local food banks in St. Thomas and Aylmer, and at Christmas we team up to sponsor a family in need through Christmas Care. Our firm also supports a wide variety of charitable organizations, including our local hospital, community foundations and conservation authority. We also support various arts programs and organizations that provide services to young people in need. It’s great to work for a firm that values community support.

We look forward to welcoming new team members that share our values of client service and complement our team dynamic at GSE!

5 Reasons to Work at GSE

1. Firm Environment
We place significant value in creating a welcoming atmosphere for our staff and clients. We emphasize a relationship building approach for our clients and reflect those same values internally. Our ‘open-door’ policy is indicative of the culture we’ve built where all partners and staff members are not only accessible but interested in your questions or insights. Throughout the year, our social committee organizes events such as our annual golf tournament and Christmas party, and some friendly competitions like step-count challenges, cook-offs, and baking competitions.

2. Professional Development
GSE takes pride in identifying as a training firm that supports the professional development of each staff member. We want to see you succeed. On a typical day you will interact with approachable colleagues to grow your technical knowledge, and throughout the year you can expect to partake in structured professional development courses. Our team dedicates time and resources to help you achieve your goals. We are proud to offer a place where there is room to grow and develop your career, as many of our long serving staff have done. Several partners can even trace their careers back to co-ops within the firm!

3. Career Support
When you join our firm, you’re joining a network of professional accountants offering their support to your success. As part of our professional development focus, we have implemented a ‘Buddy-Mentor’ program that pairs each staff member with someone in a more senior capacity. This program gives each staff member a go-to resource, and assists in setting, monitoring, and actively supporting professional goals. This includes mentoring our CPA students to a 100% success rate on the CFE/UFE over the past 5 years.

4. Work-Life Balance
Have you heard this phrase before? Our firm has been practicing this long before it became mainstream. GSE places a high value on staff satisfaction and on family. Flexible working hours allow each staff member to balance their workload and personal commitments and staff are encouraged to take the time needed to support their families and communities.

5. Variety of Work Experiences and Learning Opportunities
Our clients come from all walks of life. From local farmers, to small business owners, to large international organizations, you will be exposed to all types of client work. Our audit work is focused in the not-for-profit and municipal sectors. There are opportunities to work alongside our dedicated tax department to develop solutions to complex tax situations for both corporate and individual tax clients. This breadth of clientele keeps our staff engaged and develops their skills as well-rounded professionals.

Staff Golf Day 2019

Our annual staff golf tournament was held September 11th at the Kettle Creek Golf & Country Club.

The rain held off long enough to complete the 9 hole scramble.

Congratulations to the two teams that share the trophy this year.

Thanks to our social committee for organizing another great event.

GSE Farm Tour!

On September 16, the Aylmer office of GSE was joined by a few St. Thomas office members for a farm tour field trip!  In the morning we toured the W. Luyks Poultry Farm near Port Stanley.  Our hosts, Willy and Anne Luyks, shared a wealth of knowledge from their many years in the farming industry as we explored two pullet barns (where chicks are raised to age 19 weeks), and a layer barn (where eggs are produced).  We also toured a feed mill, where grain and supplements are mixed to exact specifications for the animals’ diet, and viewed several pieces of farm equipment, including a combine harvester, articulated tractor and sprayer.

In the afternoon we visited Crownbrook Farms, a dairy farm near Belmont.  Hosts Andre and Janneke Kroondyk guided our tour around their farm where we saw a bulk milk tank, milking parlour and feed bunkers, along with a herd of 140 milk cows, plus calves and heifers.  We even saw a calf that was born just a couple of hours prior to our arrival!  We learned that the average cow produces 20L -60L per milking (milked twice each day), and that to give the cows extra comfort, they use sand instead of straw for bedding.  We also enjoyed a sampling of cheddar cheeses and chocolate milk at the conclusion of our tour!

A special thank you to our farm hosts for their kind hospitality and taking the time to let us tour their farms!
